Alexis Rockman and a dog named Padme photographed by Kimberly M. Wang

If we're going to be honest, when we walked into the studio of the artist Alexis Rockman, the primary purpose was to meet his dog.  Instead, what we found were magical drawings on the wall - the results of a 20 years study about indigenous species and his collaboration with scientists along his travels.  The most fascinating part about the drawings is that they are made from organic materials that Alexis found locally in the locale of each particular animal he paints.  His show, Natural History of Life in New York City, opens at Salon 94 in April.  That's all I will reveal about the art now as we are here to learn about Padme, Alexis Rockman's dog.

Tricia Rosenkilde from Camerawork Studio reached out to me to present her gorgeous platinum portraits of animals. Her own dog, Katie, came from a kill shelter in Georgia; she was originally found in the woods with her three sisters, living in an old wood pile with no food.  The puppies all found wonderful homes when they were brought up to New Jersey by Eleventh Hour Rescue.

"Bubba, Bichon-Shih Tzu, age 7-1/2, Taurus (like me), constant companion, photo muse, self-portrait partner. A gypsy by nature (or maybe that's me), road-trip navigator and shotgun-rider on three cross-country trips, favors motel hallways and elevators, lives part-time in Uruguay, afraid of horses and cats, loves chorizo. He's featured in three of my photo series (so far) and can often be found modeling on my instagram feed."

My girlfriend, Sammy, and I were not sure if we were ready for a new dog after the death of our beloved dog, Edith Piaf. We went to an adoption fair from a wonderful rescue group in LA called Dogs Without Borders. We were very sad, and not sure if we were ready to bring another animal into our world… until we saw her.
