Queen Mary 2, the only passenger vessel to carry dogs and cats, has expanded its kennel service during the ship’s multi-million dollar remastering this summer. Cunard, known for its luxurious travel across the Atlantic, has a long and colorful history of carrying pets on Transatlantic Crossings.

Queen Mary 2’s kennel program is overseen by a full-time Kennel Master who takes care of daily responsibilities including feeding and walking pets and cleaning the ship’s spacious kennels. Dogs and cats are treated to as much personal attention as the guests. Before the animals arrive, the Kennel Master compiles a list of likes and needs, which he keeps on hand during the cruise.

Cunard’s pet friendly policy dates back 175 years to the maiden voyage of the Britannia in 1840 when the ship sailed with a cow to provide fresh milk for passengers. Years later, Cunard ocean liners sailed thoroughbred racehorses.Rin-Tin-Tin, star of 36 silent films, also traveled with Cunard on the Berengaria.

In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor brought her pampered puppies onboard the original Queen Mary and exercised them regularly on the ship’s sports deck.  She even ordered custom meals for them from the fish chef. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor also traveled with a beloved dog. It was at the suggestion of the pug-loving Duke of Windsor that all pets receive special accommodations and amenities to help make their travel as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Enjoy a few of the behind the scenes look at the wonderful shoot that Edie and Clair were lucky enough to be a part of.
